Vista beta2 no dvd drive

I have downloaded the vista files but i do not have a dvd drive, can i run the setup from my hard drive? is there anything special that i would have to do?

Yes...you can install it from hard drive itself...mount the iso image using daemon tools or virtual cd powertoy and upgrade your windows xp...

are you sure that's possible to do? because i was told the opposite on another forum.

To clarify, you can install Vista x86 from within XP, but not Vista x64.

so is there any risk in installing the 32 bit version from within xp which is also 32 bit?

Depends on your desire.
If you really want to test the beta, go ahead and upgrade so that you truly see the problems and can report them to MSFT. Do a quick cruise through the forum to see all the problems experienced Beta testers are having (one laptop had to be put in the freezer before it caught fire!).
If you just want to install Vista and use it because it is new, do a clean install.
Either way, do a comprehensive back-up before you do anything else or bad karma will follow you all the days of your life.

Of course there is risk. This a beta code. That automatically means risk. The whole upgrade could go sour and you lose your XP installation. As long as you are prepared for that risk, go for it. -- Tom Porterfield

If anything goes wrong you can rollback the installation...vista setup provides you with the option of rollbacking when the installation fails...anyhow as tom suggested it is beta..you may be having some glitches and driver problems causes the installation to go wrong...it is safe to try it as fresh install on secondary hard disk or new partition with dual booting, without affecting your windows xp installation..

that's a very good idea, dual-booting. can vista make a partition or will i need a new application to do that with?

I covered partitions in a list of tips. It's tip number 5:

Nice tips!
So clean-installing to another partition from a mounted ISO image on the same hard disk shouldn't be a problem? You'd end up with a dual-boot system?

So you could use an ISO of the Vista install DVD mounted by Nero DriveImage to clean-install Vista to another partition on the same hard disk?

Absolutely, but I, personally, would backup the XP partition to something else just in case.
